Watford have been relegated from the Premier League after Wilfred Zaha’s penalty secured a deserved victory for Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Defeat by Burnley last week had left the Hornets 12 points adrift of safety with four games remaining and palace sent their former manager Roy Hodgson’s side straight back down to the championship with a dominant display. The Eagles controlled the contest from the outset and went ahead when Zaha confidently swept his 31st minute spot kick past Ben Foster after Hassane Kamara had used his arm to block Michael Olise's back post header. Watford never looked looked like scoring and their misery was compounded when Kamara, already booked for that handball, was dismissed when his push on Olise produced a second yellow card. It is the second time Watford have dropped out of the top flight in the past three seasons. The manager-less Hornets also went down on the final day of the 2019-20 campaign before security an immediate return under Xisco Munoz.

It is the first time in WSL history that a club has won the title in three Successive seasons and Emma Hayes' side can make it a domestic double with victory over Manchester City in next Sunday’s FA Cup final at Wembley. Manchester United finish the season in fourth place and miss out on qualification for next year’s Champions League although Manchester City’s 4-0 win at Reading meant a United victory would not have been enough. Fans were on their feet at full-time and sang “Champions of England, we know who we are” on a joyous day which concludes one of the most thrilling WSL seasons since its introduction.

Miami Grand Prix: Max Verstappen takes hard-fought win over Charles Leclerc.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen survived a late-race assault from title rival Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari to win the inaugural Miami Grand Prix. Verstappen was cruising to an easy win after passing Leclerc early on but a late safety car brought them together for a restart with with 10 laps to go. Leclerc strained everything for five laps to get close enough to pass but Verstappen broke his challenge. Verstappen’s win cut Leclerc’s championship lead to 19 points. It was an unexpectedly dramatic finish to race that had appeared to be petering out after Verstappen’s early climb from third on the grid to the lead.

Carlos Alcaraz beats Alexander Zverev to take Madrid Open title.

Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz completed a magical week with victory over defending champion Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Open final. The 19 year old who had beaten Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in his previous two matches, swept aside the German second seed 6-3 6-1. It is Alcaraz's second Masters 1000 crown after Miami last month and his fourth title of the year. He is set to rise to sixth in the world before the French Open later in May. “The tournament is special for me because it’s a tournament I came and watched when I was seven or eight,” he said. Alcaraz was in determined form from the start against Zverev, whose Semi-final against Greek fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas did not finish until after 01:00 local time on Sunday. He outplayed and outfought the German, who was chasing a third title in the Spanish capital, right from the start.
