Landslides Render Many Stranded In Kumba

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The past weeks in Southern Cameroons have been that with heavy down pour with devastating effects on people and properties. People have been trapped in different localities as a result of inundation or landslides caused by heavy rains. The rains have even rendered some people homeless, destroying their homes, while others have relocated to other less affected areas to patch up with close ones as a result of the invading nature of floods.There is an eminent food crisis in some areas as farm lands with crops still on the farms have been swallowed up by water or covered up with soil from landslides.

Is like the heavens want to empty all of the water content to earth. All these natural hazards are coming at a time that the people of Southern Cameroons are barely struggling to survive with the hikes in the prices of basic communities. Can natural desaster be mitigated? How fast should a relief plan be made available for people in distress? Several families have been rendered homeless and movements halted in some areas in Kumba, one of the equitorial state and chief town of the Meme County of Southern Cameroons. This was as a result of the floods and landslides. The floods and landslides that occurred on the early hours of Sunday September 4, 2022, were provoked by torrential rains that fell in Kumba. The heavy down pour caused many part of the town of Kumba to be flooded, and with a landslides around Hilltop, Hausa quarter of Fiango Kumba II LGA.

The floods that inundated many parts of the town of Kumba caused many to abandoned their homes to the invading flood waters. Others were unable to access their homes as they were trapped at a spot due to the heavy nature of the runoff. The landslides at Hilltop Hausa quarter missed in a whiskers to claim the lives of a woman and the child. A narrow escape that onlookers opined could only have been the doing of God. The bank of the road collapsed at the time they were passing. This woman UNDAUNTED could not get the name and the child were all partially covered with mud from the collapsed bank of the road. They all came out save. As a result of the landslide, circulation on the stretch was halted as a heap of mud and pushed down trees covered the road, making movements across impossible.

At press time, no human casualty have been recorded so far, and those affected by the floods were still to benefit from any form of assistance from the powers that be.
