UNREST IN WUM BETWEEN LOCALS AND FULANIS

Calm retuns to Wum LGA following 2 days of unrest with Fulanis.

Concordant sources report that, the people of Aghem WUM in Menchum County, the youth in particular have in great numbers stormed the WUM grandstand, holding weapons (sticks and machetes) ready for a showdown against any odds.

This brewing situation erupted Tuesday July 26 morning when the lifeless bodies of 3 Fulani herdsmen were found in the bush in Zonghofu/wenduo neighbourhood in Wum LGA.Without any recourse to investigation, some members of the Muslim community switched into action against native Aghems, molesting, torturing and wounding a good number of persons, who are now under intensive care at the WUM district hospital, with latest updates saying one victim succumbed to his wounds.

It should be recalled that, the background to this is heavily pregnant, as the community of Aghems is out to put a stop to this routine of Muslims (most of the times backed by some deviant security officers i.e. LRC military) inflicting desolation on the host community at the least or no provocation. After combined efforts by the Mayor of WUM council, other administrators and the colonial BIR,the irate Aghems who thronged at the Grandstand have dispersed. Reports reaching us say, this move has emboldened some Fulani/Hausa assailants to resume their barbarism at court yard a neighborhood in Kesughu, Wum LGA.

The Regent of Kesughu contacted on phone lashed out at the apparent laxity of the local administration.Wondering aloud why the perpetrators of these acts are still moving around freely. Temporal calm has been reported as the elements of the colonial LRC Rapid intervention battalion – BIR have dispersed the trouble makers by firing several warning shots. Meanwhile trustworthy sources have revealed that the deaths of the 3 herdsmen which detonated this renewed crisis, was caused by other Fulani, whose cattle the former went to steal.

As we remain glued to happenings back in Wum, it is important to say that the Aghems both at home and in the diaspora are very preoccupied by this constant aggression from persons they have accepted into their community.

"This may just be one more straw that will break the camel's" an angry Aghem Son wrote .

Skirmishes between the natives of Menchum County and the nomadic fulanis, masterminded by the colonial administration backed by its colonial military have been rampant and too frequent resulting to uncountable deaths of innocent denizens, including their traditional rulers. They are a cause for concern as soon as we reach Buea
